Christmas gift for an 8-year-old: a building project that can grow over several days
Many 8-year-olds like to have something that takes a little time. Not a toy that is finished in ten minutes, but a project they can plan, build and rebuild. Crateit Town is made for that: roads, buildings and vehicles that can be linked together set by set. The range is recommended for ages 5-9.
Everything comes in uncoloured wood, and the parts click together without glue or tools. The child assembles the track, colours it with markers and changes it when the play changes.
Start with a track
Rule the Roundabout is a roundabout with approaches, 24 pieces and a car, and it covers 80 × 100 cm assembled. Around The Mountain is a mountain road with 35 pieces and 2 cars, at 80 × 85 cm. Dreamy Drawbridge is a drawbridge with 24 pieces and a car, at 80 × 65 cm.
Link several sets together
With the Adventure Track Extension (19 pieces and 4 road connectors, 80 × 65 cm) the route can grow in several directions. City Park Zone is a car park with three zones, a ramp and a roof garage, 40 pieces and three cars, at 67 × 67 cm. Our blog about wooden car tracks shows how to build a track, roundabout and mountain route step by step.
Draw the map first
A good trick from our blog: draw the track on paper, then build it afterwards. That gives an 8-year-old both a plan and a result. Measure the floor or table before you start, and build one piece at a time if you like. You will find more ideas for the town itself in wooden toy town and garage, car park and petrol station.
Colour it yourself with markers
The track can be green today and something completely different next month, because the markers cover the old layer. Put a set of Crateit markers with the gift, ideally with both 3 mm for large surfaces and 1 mm for stripes and details. Read how to colour wooden toys with markers for more advice.
How to choose
- The child who wants to build a track with speed and bends: Around The Mountain or the roundabout.
- If the child already has a track: the Adventure Track Extension and City Park Zone, to make it bigger.
- The child who loves role play: the Fire Station or the Police Station instead.
- A small extra in the parcel: a car such as Thunder Truck or the bus.
See all of Crateit Town or find the stations here: the Fire Station and the Police Station. Cars: Thunder Truck and the bus. More ideas in the Christmas gift guide. For a younger child: gifts for a 6-year-old or gifts for a 5-year-old. From grandparents: gifts for grandchildren.
