What is Crateit Town?

Crateit Town is a modular toy town made from quality wood fibre (MDF/HDF), designed in Denmark and made to grow with your child. Instead of one fixed set with set pieces, you get a collection of road pieces, houses and vehicles you can combine freely. Every time your child plays, the town can look different. That is the core idea that sets Crateit Town apart from classic wooden toys and from the plastic towns you find from other toy makers.

Where a plastic town is usually one built product with a fixed layout, Crateit Town is designed as an open system. Road pieces fit together, the houses stand freely, and the vehicles drive on every road piece. That means the first box your child unwraps can already be expanded on the next birthday, at Christmas, or when a younger brother starts growing into the game.

Why a modular town instead of a fixed playset?

The more open-ended a toy is, the more ways children can play with it. Where a ready-built plastic set has one right way to play, a modular town can be rebuilt again and again.

In practice, this means:

  • The play value lasts longer. When the town can look different every time, play does not get boring after a couple of weeks.
  • Siblings and friends can play together. Several children can each build their own part of the town and connect them.
  • Learning comes with play. Children practise fine motor skills, planning and spatial thinking when they design the town themselves.

Many parents tell us they start with one set and end up with 5-10 sets over two or three years. That is not down to marketing. It is because the child asks for more, as there is always something new to build.

Which sets are available in Crateit Town?

Crateit Town consists of three categories of products, and it is very deliberate that they are built up this way:

1. Vehicles (DKK 49)

The cars, buses and lorries. They are the most affordable products and the easiest way into the universe. Many families start here with a first gift or an introductory gift, and the collection grows from there.

2. Buildings and roads (DKK 249-499)

The houses, petrol stations, fire stations and bridges. Each set is a small play scene in its own right, and at the same time a building block in the bigger town. You can start with Crossroad Cottage and expand to Around The Mountain or Fire Station, depending on what your child is into.

3. Expansions (DKK 249)

Adventure Track Extension is a collection of road pieces without a house. It is the classic expansion: when your child has filled the whole table and wants even longer roads, this is what you add.

Which sets suit which age?

Crateit Town is designed for children aged 3 and up. We see very different play across the age groups:

AgeTypical playRecommended sets
3-4 yearsDriving cars along the roads, parking the cars at the petrol stationBus Adventures + Crossroad Cottage
5-6 yearsBuilding towns, making up stories, mixing role play and buildingCity Gas Station + Adventure Track Extension
7-9 yearsComplex towns, problems to solve, building with siblingsAround The Mountain + Fire Station + expansions

It is not a rigid recommendation. Many three-year-olds build impressive towns, and many nine-year-olds still use Bus Adventures. The point is that the set grows with the child.

Wood fibre instead of plastic

All Crateit toys are made from quality wood fibre (MDF/HDF). That means four things:

  1. Durability. The pieces can be assembled and taken apart again, and a Crateit Town set can be passed on to younger siblings.
  2. Repairable. A wooden piece that breaks can be glued or replaced. Plastic cannot.
  3. Lower environmental impact. The toys come unpainted, with no lacquer, and can be recoloured again and again instead of being replaced.
  4. Better feel. Children love the tactile feel of wood: the weight, the warmth, the sound. Plastic toys feel lifeless by comparison.

How to build a good Crateit Town collection

Our recommendation for families starting out with Crateit Town:

Starter pack (gift 1)

Bus Adventures (DKK 49) + Crossroad Cottage (DKK 249). DKK 298 in total. That is enough to start playing on the dining table or the living room floor, and your child gets both a vehicle and a house.

Growing pack (after six months)

Add City Gas Station (DKK 329). Now your child has somewhere to "fill up" the bus, and play gets more of a story.

Big collection (12-18 months in)

Add Around The Mountain (DKK 399) and Adventure Track Extension (DKK 249). Now you have a whole town with mountains, bends and long roads. Many families stop here, while others carry on with Fire Station, Dreamy Drawbridge and more vehicles.

The great thing is that you do not have to decide everything at once. Every set works as a first set AND as an addition, so the collection grows naturally with your child.

Frequently asked questions

How does Crateit Town compare with other wooden toys?

Crateit Town is a modular town where all the road pieces, houses and vehicles fit together. Unlike fixed sets, you can mix across sets and build the town differently every time. That gives more play value over time and suits both 3-year-olds and 9-year-olds.

Which set should I start with?

We recommend Bus Adventures (DKK 49) as a first gift. It is an affordable way in. Add Crossroad Cottage (DKK 249) to get a house and roads, so your child has a little town from day one.

Do all the Town sets fit together?

Yes. The whole Town range is built on the same modular principle, so road pieces from Bus Adventures fit Around The Mountain, and the vehicles drive on every road. That means you can safely start small and expand later.

From what age can children play with Crateit Town?

Crateit Town is recommended from age 3. Younger children may enjoy the largest, simplest sets under supervision, but the road pieces are designed for ages 3+. Many children carry on playing with Crateit Town until they are 9-10.

What is the difference between Crateit Town and Crateit Roomies?

Crateit Town is an outdoor town with roads, vehicles and buildings. Crateit Roomies is an indoor dolls' house with rooms, furniture and role play about everyday life. Both ranges are modular and can be combined, and many families have both.
