Crateit Roomies: The modern wooden dolls' house
Crateit Roomies is Crateit's answer to the classic dolls' house, rethought from scratch. Where traditional dolls' houses are usually one large, ready-built house with fixed rooms, Roomies is a collection of modules you can combine to suit your child's play. You start with one room (the bathroom, for example) and add a living room, playroom or bedroom over time.
Roomies is designed for the modern family, where children are no longer tied to one particular story. The girl who is ten, the boy who is four and the younger sibling who is two can all find meaning in Roomies, because the rooms are open enough to hold each of their games.
What makes Roomies different from a traditional dolls' house?
Three things:
1. Modular design
Each Roomies set is one room or a combination of rooms. You can place them side by side, on top of each other, or separately. There is no "right" way. That means the houses are never finished, and your child designs the architecture.
2. Furniture included
Each Roomies room comes with furniture suited to the room: the bathroom has a bath and a sink, the living room has a sofa and a coffee table, the playroom has toy details. That means your child can play from day one without buying furniture separately.
3. Wood fibre, not plastic
Like the rest of the Crateit range, Roomies is made from wood fibre (MDF), not plastic. The houses come uncoloured, so the colours are your own, and they can be coloured again when the play changes.
Which Roomies sets are available?
The Roomies range is growing all the time. At the moment, two sets are available:
The Bubble Nest: Bathroom and bedroom (DKK 399)
The classic way into Roomies. Bubble Nest covers the two rooms where children are often most interested in role play: the bathroom (with bath, sink and toilet) and the bedroom (with bed and bedside table). The morning routine, bedtime, washing: everything that is everyday life in the real world.
Couch & Crayons: Living room and playroom (DKK 599)
The largest Roomies set. Couch & Crayons covers the living room and playroom, with a sofa, coffee table, drawing kit and children's tables. Where Bubble Nest is about routines, Couch & Crayons is about quality time: cosy evenings, weekend play and guests.
How to combine Roomies with Crateit Town
Many families buy both Crateit Town and Roomies. That makes sense, because the two ranges cover different kinds of play:
- Crateit Town is outdoors: towns, vehicles, bridges, roads. Movement and logistics.
- Crateit Roomies is indoors: everyday life, family, routines. Feelings and relationships.
In practice, that means a big Crateit collection usually has a town outside (Town) and a house inside (Roomies). The vehicles from Town can park by the Roomies house. The family in Roomies can take the bus to Town. The two worlds meet naturally.
What age is Roomies for?
Roomies is recommended from age 3. In practice, we see an interesting variation: 3-4-year-olds mainly play with the furniture (putting it in place, moving it around), 5-7-year-olds build full scenarios with dolls, and 8-10-year-olds create complex stories where Roomies is the backdrop for a longer narrative.
| Age | Typical play |
|---|---|
| 3-4 years | Furniture in and out, dolls in the bath, putting dolls to bed |
| 5-7 years | Family play, hospital visits, birthdays, guests |
| 8-10 years | Complex stories, placed in the Town, sharing with siblings |
Why modern wooden dolls' houses instead of plastic?
Most dolls' houses on the market are either plastic or MDF. Both have problems:
- Plastic is easy to produce but does not last. It breaks, loses its colour and is quickly thrown away. Neither good for the environment nor for how long the play lasts.
- Cheap composite wood without proper quality control can scratch and be damaged by moisture.
Crateit Roomies is made from wood fibre (MDF) and comes uncoloured. You choose the colours yourselves, and the house can be coloured again when the play changes.
What do you get for your money?
The Roomies sets are not cheap. Bubble Nest costs DKK 399, Couch & Crayons DKK 599. It is an investment. But if you compare them with traditional dolls' houses and their furniture bought separately, you usually end up in the same price range. The difference is that Crateit Roomies comes as one complete playset ready to use, not an empty shell you have to fill.
Our experience from parents is that the set is used for at least 3-5 years, often 7+ years if there are several siblings. That gives a price per hour of play that is lower than most plastic dolls' houses in the same price range.

Frequently asked questions
What is Crateit Roomies?
Crateit Roomies is a modern wooden dolls' house built in modules. Each set is one or two rooms with furniture, and you can combine them however you like. It is Crateit's answer to the traditional dolls' house, designed for modern families where play does not have to follow fixed templates.
Which Roomies set should I start with?
The Bubble Nest (DKK 399) is the classic way in. It covers the bathroom and bedroom, the two rooms where children usually do the most role play about everyday routines. Couch & Crayons (DKK 599) is a good expansion when your child wants a living room and playroom too.
Does Roomies work with Crateit Town?
Yes. Roomies and Town are designed to work both on their own and together. Many families have both ranges, with Town as the outdoor town and Roomies as the indoor house. The vehicles from Town park by the Roomies house, and the family in Roomies can take the bus to Town.
From what age can children play with Roomies?
Roomies is recommended from age 3. Younger children may enjoy the furniture under supervision.
Why is Roomies more expensive than a plastic dolls' house?
Roomies is made from wood fibre (MDF) and comes uncoloured, so you choose the colours yourselves. The furniture is included in the set, so there is nothing extra to buy for the interior.
